Buying Interstate

Interstate buying opens up the national market. Managed properly, it carries no more risk than buying down the road.

Why prices differ between states

Supply, seasonal demand and local preference all vary. Four wheel drives and utes command a premium in some markets, convertibles and prestige sedans in others.

For some models the difference comfortably exceeds the cost of transport, which is why a genuinely national search so often finds a better car for less.

Inspection is non negotiable

Never rely on photographs and a description. An independent inspection by a qualified mechanic or marque specialist in the vehicle's home state is the single most important step.

Pair it with a PPSR check for finance encumbrance, written off status and stolen vehicle records.

Registration, stamp duty and compliance

Stamp duty is payable in the state where the vehicle is registered, not where it is bought. Transferring registration usually requires a safety inspection in the destination state.

Timing matters if existing registration is close to expiry, since paying twice is an easy and avoidable cost.

Transport and handover

Open transport is the standard option for most vehicles, with enclosed transport appropriate for prestige and low kilometre cars. Typical transit is several days to a week depending on the route.

Condition should be documented before dispatch and verified on arrival, before the vehicle is signed for.
