BMW's Australian line-up is broad and its option lists are long. Knowing which boxes to tick is the difference between a strong buy and an expensive one.

Reading the range

Odd numbers denote sedans and hatches, even numbers the coupe and Gran Coupe derivatives, X models the SUVs, and i models the electric range.

In Australia the X3, X5 and 3 Series carry the most reliable resale demand, which makes them lower risk choices if you expect to change within four years.

M Sport, M Performance and M

M Sport is a styling and suspension package. M Performance cars such as the M340i sit between, with genuine drivetrain upgrades. Full M cars are separately engineered.

Each tier has its own resale curve. Full M models can hold value strongly in the right specification, but they are also the most sensitive to colour and option choices.

Packages worth the money

Comfort, visibility and driver assistance packages consistently return more than cosmetic add-ons. Adaptive suspension, upgraded audio and a head-up display are widely sought second-hand.

Individual paint and rare trim can work on halo models, but on volume models they typically lengthen the time it takes to sell.

The cost of ownership picture

Service packages purchased upfront are usually materially cheaper than pay-as-you-go, and they transfer with the car, which supports the resale conversation.

Tyres, brakes and out-of-warranty electronics are the three costs owners most often underestimate, particularly on larger wheel and performance specifications.
