The dual cab is Australia's default vehicle, doing duty as a work tool, family car and tow vehicle. Very few buyers need the same one.
Payload is the first filter
Once a canopy, racking, tools, a bull bar and passengers are added, several popular utes are at or beyond their legal limit.
Work out your real loaded weight before shortlisting. It eliminates more contenders than any other single criterion.
Towing in the real world
Nearly all claim 3,500kg braked, but GCM limits mean you often cannot carry a full load and tow the maximum simultaneously.
Read the GCM figure and subtract honestly. It is the number that determines whether the combination is legal, not the towing headline.
Cabin, comfort and technology
The Ranger and Amarok lead on interior quality and technology, which matters when the vehicle doubles as family transport.
HiLux and D-Max remain more utilitarian, and for pure work use that is often exactly the right trade.
Running costs, resale and verdict
HiLux and Ranger resale is consistently strongest, which offsets a higher purchase price across a typical ownership period.
For work first, the D-Max and HiLux are hard to fault. For dual-purpose family and towing duty, the Ranger and Amarok are the better vehicles to live with.
