When Is the Best Time to Sell Your Car?

Selling well is partly preparation and partly timing. The second costs nothing, which makes it the easiest money in the process.

Seasonal demand

Convertibles and sports cars sell best entering spring. Four-wheel drives and touring vehicles strengthen ahead of winter and the holiday travel season.

Family SUVs peak around the start of the school year. Listing into rising demand rather than out of it is worth a genuine percentage.

EOFY and plate changes

The lead-up to 30 June brings business buyers chasing deductions, which supports prices on utes, vans and business-suitable vehicles.

Compliance plate rollovers age your vehicle on paper overnight. Selling before a rollover avoids an instant paper depreciation hit.

Warranty and service milestones

Remaining factory warranty is a genuine selling asset. Values commonly step down once it expires, particularly on European vehicles.

Selling just before an expensive scheduled service, while still presenting a complete history, avoids paying for work the next owner benefits from.

Kilometre thresholds and market cycle

Buyers anchor to round numbers. Crossing 100,000 kilometres typically costs more than the kilometres themselves justify.

Watch supply too. When new vehicle lead times stretch, used values firm. When supply normalises, they soften, and that cycle can outweigh every other factor.
