Australia's two full-size four-wheel drive institutions. The comparison is unusually clear-cut once you decide what the vehicle is for.

Drivetrains

The 300 Series twin-turbo diesel V6 is the more efficient and more flexible engine, with strong low-range torque suited to touring and heavy towing.

The Patrol's naturally aspirated petrol V8 is characterful and mechanically simple, but the fuel bill is a genuine ownership factor.

Touring and towing

Diesel range advantage matters enormously for remote travel. The LandCruiser covers distance between fills that the Patrol simply cannot match.

Both tow well. The Patrol's ride quality when loaded is excellent, while the LandCruiser is the easier vehicle to provision for long remote trips.

Interior and technology

The 300 Series is the more modern cabin, with current driver assistance and infotainment across the range.

The Patrol's interior shows its age, and buyers should weigh that against a purchase price that is often substantially lower.

Purchase reality and verdict

LandCruiser demand still outstrips supply on popular grades, and buying at the right price requires sourcing beyond your local dealer.

Buy the LandCruiser for remote touring, efficiency and resale. Buy the Patrol for value, comfort and a V8 that will not exist much longer.
